Party Policy

Liberal Democrats believe on a fair, free and open society. A society in which every one has the liberty, equality and community and in which no-one shall be enslaved by poverty, ignorance or conformity. Party prepares its Federal Policy and then makes the policies of its regional parties for Scottish and Wales liberal parties. Policy papers are produced by policy working groups. Twice a year, in spring and autumn, elected representatives from Liberal Democrat constituency parties assemble at the party conference to establish federal party policy - the Liberal Democrat priorities for UK government. Federal policy covers those areas which come in the federal institutions of federal united Kingdom. England, Scotland and Wales set their own policies for their own areas.
  • They support greater civil liberties and open government. Their policy focuses on those reforms that increase parliamentary oversight of the executives.
  • Party policies support the transfer of power to the lowest possible level. So that real public leaders can join the government and every one can get equal status in the society.
  • Party favors the proportional representation for elections to House of Commons and Second Chamber. Because in this way they can easily replace the STV system.
  • Party believes in dignity and security in retirement. That's why they propose a substantial non-means tested increase in pensions.
  • Free education to all is an important part of party's policies. Party policies suggest that either the university tuition fees must abolish or government should give grants to all students.
  • They are in favor of a new 50% rate of tax on incomes over £100,000 per year. They also propose that local income tax must be introduced to replace current council tax.
  • Party policy favors the Labor Rights. They have a policy with the name of Right and Responsibilities at Work. This policy deals with employment and trade union issues.
  • Liberal Democrats opposed the UK participation in Iraq War.
  • Liberal Democrats strongly support the participation of UK in European Union and joining the Euro.
  • Party strongly favors the environment protection reforms. It has made a committee which takes different actions to protect environment and to create awareness among people about environment.
  • Public health is also an important part of party policies. They believe on healthy communities, healthy people.
  • Party's most famous policy was to increase the basic rate of income tax by 1 percentage point to fund key public services (especially education).
